Supporting Our Children During COVID-19

Unlike adults, children seem to be less vulnerable to the immediate effects of coronavirus, with fewer cases in children leaving them off the “high-risk” list. Though not effected directly [health wise] the corona virus can have a long lasting impact on our children today.

“The worldwide closure of schools has no historical precedent. 188 countries have imposed country-wide closures, affecting more than 1.5 billion children and youth.” [ARTICLE HERE]

Some without internet access or technology, leaving the already challenging “distance learning” to be next to impossible.

Children can experience stress due to parent struggles, loss of jobs, fear of virus spread, the list goes on.

It is so important to support our children during the coronavirus crisis.

The Child Mind Institute includes tips like

  • Keeping routines in place
  • Being creative about new activities – and exercise
  • Staying in touch virtually

Our continued goal at Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts to help our students “come out of quarantine better.” I continuously voice this to both our children and adults almost every class. We want to have better eating habits, better sleeping habits, exercise more as opposed to less. Less electronics and games, more positive healthy habits.

Consistency with martial arts training is an important aspect of maintaining those healthy habits. Martial Arts has many positive mental benefits to offer these children (and adults), when they need it most.

They can-

  • maintain a social interaction with their instructors and fellow classmates
  • rely on martial arts as an energy release
  • improve focus and concentration
  • use martial arts as an outlet for stressors and anxiety
  • expand their confidence
  • stay on track on their road to black belt and beyond

Though I know virtual classes do not compare to in house training, it has been a phenomenal way to keep up with our training and seeing all our students during this historic difficult time. As always, I thank each and every one of our students, families, and staff for their continued support.
