Effects of Quitting on Children

A phenomenal article I came across regarding the negative effects of allowing children to quit. My goal is to constantly make Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts a place of positivity for our students while instilling necessary skills to succeed in life- whether that be in martial arts, a member of society, school/work or generally. Over the years, I have had numerous conversations with students and parents about quitting martial arts. But ask any of those students that continued to train and put in the work if it was worth it and I can guarantee they would say yes.

“Quitting relieves stress. That’s why dogs do it. That’s why adults do it. That’s why you’re tempted to do it every damn day. And quitting can be good; it’s a means of stepping out of a vicious cycle. Unfortunately, for children, it’s more often a means of pulling the plug on the learning process, which necessitates failure and stress. When kids quit, they hurt themselves and establish a habit likely to be damaging later in life. To stop a kid from quitting is to save them from going bump, bump, bump down an initially slippery and ultimately gravely slope

“We as human beings act according to our beliefs,” explains Koenig. “And we are very consistent with acting according to our beliefs.” If the biggest belief a child absorbs is that learning new things requires work, and that work is worth doing when there’s something on the other side worth moving toward, well, that’s pretty good. Accepting that things aren’t going to be fun all the time but are worth doing anyway is a big step toward maturity.

As a parent, the entire article is well-worth a read, click here to do so.

Kids Virtual Martial Arts Class

Supporting Our Children During COVID-19

Unlike adults, children seem to be less vulnerable to the immediate effects of coronavirus, with fewer cases in children leaving them off the “high-risk” list. Though not effected directly [health wise] the corona virus can have a long lasting impact on our children today.

“The worldwide closure of schools has no historical precedent. 188 countries have imposed country-wide closures, affecting more than 1.5 billion children and youth.” [ARTICLE HERE]

Some without internet access or technology, leaving the already challenging “distance learning” to be next to impossible.

Children can experience stress due to parent struggles, loss of jobs, fear of virus spread, the list goes on.

It is so important to support our children during the coronavirus crisis.

The Child Mind Institute includes tips like

  • Keeping routines in place
  • Being creative about new activities – and exercise
  • Staying in touch virtually

Our continued goal at Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts to help our students “come out of quarantine better.” I continuously voice this to both our children and adults almost every class. We want to have better eating habits, better sleeping habits, exercise more as opposed to less. Less electronics and games, more positive healthy habits.

Consistency with martial arts training is an important aspect of maintaining those healthy habits. Martial Arts has many positive mental benefits to offer these children (and adults), when they need it most.

They can-

  • maintain a social interaction with their instructors and fellow classmates
  • rely on martial arts as an energy release
  • improve focus and concentration
  • use martial arts as an outlet for stressors and anxiety
  • expand their confidence
  • stay on track on their road to black belt and beyond

Though I know virtual classes do not compare to in house training, it has been a phenomenal way to keep up with our training and seeing all our students during this historic difficult time. As always, I thank each and every one of our students, families, and staff for their continued support.

Virtual Testing at Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts

Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts has gone virtual. Since the mandated shut down that began on March 17, 2020, Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts immediately began running off a modified virtual schedule. Students have the opportunity to train live where they can participate, ask questions, and instructors can see you and give feedback (all from your living room). In addition, all the classes are recorded and available to students.

Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts has found a solution to every problem to best serve their students. When quarterly children’s belt promotion graduation was forced to be canceled, Tri State offered COVID-19 CDC complaint pick up’s which allowed parents and students to pick up their new martial arts belts. In addition, instructors including owner and operator, Jeff Jones delivered dozens of belts to students homes all across the Lower Bucks county area.

Tri State offered a virtual opportunity for their Adult Fundamentals class, where students who were eligible for promotion were able to test on the zoom platform.

As of most recent, Tri State Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Art’s Children’s program was due for stripe testing, the first testing opportunity since receiving their new belts.  Instructors connect with the students 1:1 during their allotted testing time for this unique opportunity.

“Thanks for working out the virtual testing. Desmond running out of his room to tell his dad and little brother about his green stripe just made everyone’s day here… Thank you for that.” one parent exclaimed.

Although the majority of stripe testing was executed last week, some testing still continues into this week.

“Our goal is to keep all of our students on track, not only with their martial arts training, but in life. This is a time where it’s very easy to fall into unfavorable habits. We strive to keep our students and their habits positive,” owner Jeff Jones states.

If you think Martial Arts could be beneficial to you, Tri State is offering TWO FREE WEEKS of virtual classes. Click here for more information.
