Fighting the New Norm
Back to school this year looks a little different for most of us. We aren’t out buying school supplies because we don’t really know what’s needed. With most area public schools converting to the Online Learning, many parents struggle with the idea. No matter what side of the spectrum you stand, children are missing out on some major benefits that they receive with in person learning/schooling.
In a time where we wait for the world to return to “normal,” whatever that is for you: missing out on summer movies, attending your favorite professional sports teams’ game, children back at school, or just not wearing a mask anymore; it is very easy to get frustrated and negative.
It’s so important to stay positive and keep your life positive.
Developing Positive Habits and Staying Disciplined with your Habits: being consistent with exercise, waking up at the same time, stay in routine, reading. Whatever it may be; stick with it. Last week we had bad storms come through the area and we were unable to have class both virtually and in person one day due to power outages. I had a student who did a recorded class at home to stay on track. No excuses could get in her way. (A great benefit on our virtual recordings.)
Don’t Stop Learning: In some way, shape or form. If you are not learning, your mind is not growing. It is so important to continuously be learning something new (martial arts are phenomenal for mental growth).
Keeping up with Goals: Five years ago, when we set our long-term goals, we did not see coronavirus causing a major obstacle in the road. That’s ok. That doesn’t mean you can’t reach that goal. Your goals may be altered, the timeline may have changed, but goals are so important. Where do you see yourself? How can you make yourself better? Set goals for yourself to keep improving to be the best version of yourself.
Consistently Exercise: Gym facilities have limitations; youth sports being shut down or running on limited schedules it’s easy to fall behind on exercise. Social media was flooded with jokes about the Quarantine 15 (see a longer article on WebMD weight gain during the shutdown HERE). Exercise is not only healthy for your body; but your mental health as well. No matter what it is you do- keep moving!
Socialization: One major benefit our children get out on in person instruction in school is socialization (outside the four walls of your home). Socialization is so important to the mental growth of children (and adults). Wherever your comforts lie continuously strive to get that socialization. Virtual play dates, martial arts class, meeting friends at the park.
This is why martial arts is so great. It takes all these aspects and puts them all into one thing you can do for yourself or your child. The list of benefits of martial arts for both children and adults go on and on. So whether you’re an adult who’s seeking something new or a parent looking for a way to get your child the social, mental and physical exercise they need; we work around the clock to make sure our programs benefit our students. Our goal since Day 1 of Quarantine was to come out of this better, and every day we certainly strive to aid our students in doing just that.
